  • Opposite of PTSD
24
Q

Date Rape

A

most common form of rape (especially at college)
- some male offenders think when a woman says no she really means yes
- men tend to mispercieve a woman being friendly as being flirty
- sexually aggressive men like to think women don’t communicate honestly

date rape drug = roofie
- slipped into a drink
- causes victim to fall asleep or drowsy and then the man rapes her in her sleep
- she usually doesn’t remember the next day

25
Marital Rape
Marital Rape = rape by a current or former spouse Intimate partner rape = married couples and cohabitating couples - if you're likely to beat your wife, you're likely to rape them
26
Causes of Rape
1. Victim-percipitated rape - rape is always caused by a woman 2. Psychopathology of rapists - the man is psychologically disturbed 3. Feminist - men rape to use power over women 4. Sociological - understanding sexual citizenship and sexual geographies - Sexual citizenship = knowing your right to sexual self-determination - sexual geography = space and the people who control the space (ex: frats throw parties where they control the space not sororities)
27
Culture Impact on Rape
- results in a study show that there's a correlation between men's hostility towards women and sexual coercion Rape culture = refers to deeply entrenched attitudes about gender and sexuality that shape people’s attitudes about rape - ex: the man thinking the woman wanted to be raped sexual scripts = Scripts might support rape when they say that the man is supposed to be the sexual aggressor - this justifies rape for people who support the script - young men who are sexual aggressors are likley to have been sexually abused as children
28
Alcohol in Sexual Assault
men who are drunk are more likely to SA effects of alcohol on the perp: - Pharmacological effects - the actual effects of the drug on the body and behavior - Psychological effects - people think drinking alcohol will make them more sociable and sexual uninhibited effects of alcohol on victims: - pharmocological effects are the same - people underestimate their impairement - alcohol reduces anxiety, making the woman think she's okay - white men are protected from consequences of SA and black men aren't
29
Victims of Rape: Men
women are more likely to be raped than men - perps are usually men - in the Millenial Generation, women used tricks like getting them drunk or high - men experience PTSD from being raped
30
Victims of Rape: Trans People
- have a high rate of experiencing sexual assault - trans women of color who have been assaulted avoid going out in public
31
Prison Rape
Prison staff are often the perpetrators and other prisoners - Many male prisoners had been raped anally - Prison rape is an expression of power and aggression – prisoners use it to establish a hierarchy
32
Race/Ethnicity Rape
After the Civil War, a Black man convicted or accused of rape by a white woman was usually lynched or castrated (no penalty for white men) - stereotypes of Black men and women being highly sexual - many black women think no one will believe them if they report it - many of the black women that were raped believe it was because of the Jezebel Stereotype
33
Preventing Rape
1. Avoid hazardous situations 2. Communicate your limits clearly 3. Be assertive 4. Trust your instincts 5. Respond physically lots of rape prevention programs
34
Sexual Solicitation of the Internet
Sexual solicitation on the Internet = the sexual predator meets a child online, gain’s the kid’s confidence and arranges an in-person meeting
35
Sextortion
Sextortion = threats to expose sexual images with the goal of coercing victims to provide pictures or engage in sex ex: Facebook Study - A majority felt they have been pressured or tricked - Some of the victims had images recorded without consent - The perpetrators wanted thinsg in return for not publicizing the photos (victim to stay with the perp, victim to meet in person, victim to give more photos)
36
Incest
Incest = sexual contact between blood relatives - Can also include non-blood relatives (ex: stepfather and stepdaughter) - Sibling incest is likely to be the most common form of incest Risk factors: being female, parental problems like violence, and having a stepfather present in the home
37
Impact on Child Victims of Sexual Violence `
Child may be traumatized if they have to testify in court - When the kids grow up to be adults, they experience more depression, anxiety, eating disorders, alcohol and drug dependence, negative feelings about sex - They might develop sexual aversion (fear of sex) - Female child sexual abuse victims are more likely to be teen moms -The effects of childhood sexual assault are worse if it was intercourse
38
Pedophilia
Pedophilia = an adult having fanatsies or actual sexual activity with a prepubescent child (usually 13 or younger) - Must have intense sexually arousing fantisies, sexual urges, or behaviors that last up to at least 6 months - Pedophilia is a paraphilia - They’re more likely to have had accidents like head injury before age 6 (this could impact the development of their brain) - Pedophiles have decreased gray matter volume in their amygdala and orbitofrontal cortex - Pedophiles are more likely to have been sexual abused as children - Reserachers have come up with tests to see reaction time between children and sex Most people think that if you’re a pedophile, your attraction doesn’t go away
39
Treatments for Pedophiles
- Surgical castration - Antiandrogen drugs (ex: Leuprolide Acetate reduces the action of testosterone in the body – not very effective) - SSRIs (they use these if they think sex offending is because of OCD) - Behavioral Treatment (teaches pedophiles to control their sexual arousal toward kids) ex: Classical conditioning *A lot of these methods aren’t very effective
40
"Quid Pro Quo Harassment"
“Quid pro quo harassment” – I’ll do something for you if you do something for me Ex: You have sex with me and I’ll give you a promotion
41
Sexual Harassment at Work
- sexual assault in the miltary is a problem - Reserach shows that women who report sexual harassment are less likely to be reccomended for a promotion (this is why many women don’t report sexual harassment) 3 clusters of stereotypes against women: sexy, nontraditional, and traditional
42
4 Types of Harassment at Work: Earnest Harassment
1. Earnest harassment – the man is truly motivated by a desire for sexual intimacy but he won’t take no for an answer - Stereotypes women as sexy
43
4 Types of Harassment at Work: Hostile Harassment
Hostile harassment – the man wants to dominate the woman usually because he thinks she’s being competitive with him in the workplace - Stereotypes her as nontraditional - He continues to harass if he’s rejected
44
4 Types of Harassment at Work: Paternalistic-Ambivalent Harassment
paternalistic -ambivalent harassment — the man wants sexual intimacy and wants to be like a father to her
45
4 Types of Harassment at Work: Competitive-Ambivalent Harassment
Competitive-ambivalent harassment — mixes real sexual attraction and a stereotype of women as sexy with the desire to dominate the woman - He thinks she is nontraditional and competitive with him
46
The Computer Harassment Paradigm
The men could harass the woman by sending her pornographic material - The men exposed to the feminist sent a lot more pornagraphic material
47
Sexual Harassment in Education
- In 1977, women students sued Yale (Alexander v. Yale) - A lot of male teachers who are harassers and peers 1. Percieved Intitutional Tolerance for sexual harassment - Best predictor for sexual harassment - When an intiution is intolerant of sexual harassment, the enviornment gets better 2. Enviornments where men outnumber women - Usually engineering or medical schools 3. Hierarchical power structure within the organization - Workers are unwilling to report harassment because of fear from powerful people 4. Compliance with Title IX regulations that is only symbolic - Doesn’t change the environment, usually just is so the institution can avoid liability 5. Uninformed leadership in the organization - They try to cover up sexual harassment issues
48
Doctor-Patient Sex
- Can seriously negatively impact the patient - Unequal power
