Benzodiazepine consideration
For short-term use (2-4 weeks)
MAOI dietary restrictions
Avoid all foods containing tyramine
- banana, avocado, raisins (any dried fruit)
- No organ meats
- No preserved meats
- No yogurt or cheese except for cottage or mozzarella
- No caffeine, alcohol, or chocolate
- do NOT take OTC meds
Lithium toxic effects
Tremors, metallic taste, severe diarrhea
What must be monitored for a patient on lithium?
Sodium
NOTE: low sodium = toxicity; high sodium = nontherapeutic
Prozac considerations
- administer before noon and never at bedtime (d/t insomnia side effect)
- monitor for increased suicidal risk
Clozapine major side effect
Agranulocytosis, bone marrow suppression
Sertraline interactions
St. John’s wort (serotonin syndrome) and warfarin
S/S of serotonin syndrome
SADHEAD: sweating, apprehension, dizziness, headache
