Psych 209: Statistics Flashcards
Measures of Central Tendency
statistics that identify the center of a “distribution” of scores
Frequency Distribution
shows how often each value occurs in a distribution
Descriptive Statistics
summarize information about any set of data
Mode
the most frequently occurring score in a distribution
Median
the middle score in a distribution
Either dead center, or the average of the center two (for even amounts of data)
Mean
The average of a set of data
Measures of Dispersion
quantify the degree to which a set of scores, overall, differs from the mean
Variance
the average of the squared deviations about the mean
SUM(X - MEAN)^2 / N
Standard Deviation
The square root of the variance
Range
Largest # - smallest #
Inferential Statistics
data from a sample that is used to estimate characteristics of a larger population
