What defines panic disorder?
Panic attacks that lead to anxiety and behavioral changes (avoidance) related to possibility of recurrence of the panic attack.
What is the treatment for specific phobias (ex: snakes, heights)?
Anxiolytics and exposure therapy.
What is the treatment for social phobia?
Meds and therapy.
How long must you have flashbacks, avoidance of reminders, and intrusive thoughts to be diagnosed as PTSD?
At least 1 month.
What is the treatment for PTSD?
psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), SSRIs/SNRIs

What is adjustment disorder?
emotional and behavioral reaction that is greater than would be expected for stressor and affects work or social life.
What is dysthymic disorder?
less severe depression: depressed for 2+ years, most days for most of the day
What is personality disorder?
personality trait that is so extreme it causes impairment/distress and behavior outside the “norm”.

What is schizoid?
detached socially with restricted range of emotions in interpersonal settings
What is schizotypal?
Social and relationship deficits result in discomfort and decrease in close relationships and eccentric behavior.
What is cluster B of personality disorders?
Dramatic, emtional and erratic:
Histrionic, narcissistic, borderline, antisocial
What is cluster C of personality disorders?
Anxious or fearful:
Avoidant
Dependent
Obsessive-compulsive
What is histrionic personality disorder?
excessive emotionality and attention seeking
What is narcissistic personality?
Grandiosity, need for admiration, and lack of empathy
What is borderline personality?
unstable relationships, self image, affect, and impulse control
What is antisocial personality?
disregard for rights of others–>lying, cheating, stealing, neglect
What are psychoses and what are they treated with?
disturbance in the perception of reality that manifests as hallucination, delusion or thought disorganization–treated with antipsychotics
What is schizophrenia?
severe chronic psychosis that leads to progressive deterioration in functioning–antipychotics generally help with symptoms (hallucinations/dilusions) but there is still a steady decline in things like affect, anhedonia, intellectual function, memory, bizarre behavior, ect.
What is delusional disorder?
isolated, NON-bizarre delusion in otherwise functioning person (ex: I think someone put a chip in me)
What is somatoform disorder?
syndrome of nonspecific physical complaints that can’t be explained medically (could be aware or not–may have secondary gain)
What is the CAGE screen for etoh and drugs?
- Tried to cut down?
- Annoyed when asked
- Do you feel guilty about your actions?
- Do you need an eye opener?
What is conduct disorder?
Disruptive behavior in CHILDREN with primary features of aggression, theft, vandalism, violations of rules and lying.
What is the treatment for conduct disorder?
Usually supportive but can try ADHD drugs.
