Atrial Septal Defect and Coarctation of the Aorta Flashcards
What is coarctation of the aorta?
pulmonary artery and aorta are connected through the duct and when the duct closes blood struggles to get to the body
How do pts with coarctation present?
systemic shock (gray, poor cap refill, hypotensive, heart failure)
What is a comon association with coarctation?
turner’s sndrome
What is the murmur in coarctation?
systolic left intraclavicular and subsapular
Pulses and BP are different in the upper and lower extremities in what?
coarctation of the aorta (BP will have 20 mmHg difference)
What is the treatment for coartaction?
initially prostaglandin E1 to open ductus and eventually surgery
What is high risk in spite of correction of coarctation?
cerebral aneurysm (risk of rupture increases with age)
Which are is likely to have a higher blood pressure in coarctation?
right
What direction shunt is Atrial Septal Defect?
left to right until the pulmonary hypertension increases so much that it switches
What will the heart sound be on ASD?
split S2
What are 2 main signs on exam of ASD?
right heart failure and atrial arrhythmias
What is the murmur with VSD?
holo-systolic
What kind of shunt is VSD?
left to right until pulmonary hypertension increase so much it switches
