case
A 27-year-old man was admitted to the hospital after suffering extensive third-degree burns.
➢ Three days later, he spiked a fever, and there was pus on the dressing that had a blue– green color.
➢ Gram stain of the pus revealed gram-negative rods.

Culture
➢ Nutrient agar: Opaque, irregular colonies with metallic sheen (iridescence) and produce
diffusible pigments which are either blue-green (pyocyanin), or yellow green
(pyoverdin).
➢ Blood agar: β-hemolytic grey moist colonies
➢ MacConkey agar: NLF colonies
➢ Selective media: e.g. cetrimide agar
➢ Sweet ether or alcohol-like fruity odor
