PROTOZOA AND HELMINTHS Flashcards
protozoa
Protist -> protozoa (heterotrophic/parasitic) -> protophyta (Autotrophic) -> Moulds (saprophytic)
Protozoa
Unicellular eukaryotes
non -photosynthetic
10-52um
Widely distributed habitats
movement -> pseudopodia, no movement, flagella and cilia
Sexual reproduction:
Micronuclei decide and join at the oral groove, micronuclei disintegrate and move to the groove, micronuclei divide by mitosis and two matching pairs, separation;one type in each and pairs fuse.
Cilliate examples
Mostly nonpathogenic, some form symbiotic relationships
mastigophora (the flagellates):
They have 1+ flagella, movement, most species free living and mobile, inhabit fresh water, reproduce via binary fission.
Apicomplexa
parasitic , unique organelle (apicoplast, plasmodium), complex life cycles- asexual and sexual.
Plasmodium falciparum
malaria
Parasitic worms
Macroscopic and multicellular
Not intracellular
Roundworms
Elongated, round and unsegmented. Humans carry infections-ingestion of egg or lava.
Pinworm:
Enterobiasis: small, thin white worm, female lays eggs, reinfection faecal-oral route.
Platyhelminthes:
Flatworms:
Hermaphroditic, trematoda (flukes) and cestoda (tapeworms).
Tapeworm:
Intestinal, segmented and lack a digestive system
