INFECTION AND IMMUNITY Flashcards
Components of innate immunity:
Epithelial barriers
Inflammation
Antimicrobial peptides
Cytokines
Complement
Phagocytic cell, receptor
Cells of innate immunity:
Neutrophils
Monocytes
Eosinophils
Natural killer cells
Macrophages
Mast cells
Dendritic cells
Adaptive immunity:
high specificity, slow reaction, quicker upon secondary exposure and develops memory.
Cell-mediated immunity
Principal defence against intracellular microbes. Intracellular microbes. Survive and proliferate inside host cells and are inaccessible to circulating antibodies. Mediated by T lymphocytes, destruction of microbes residing inside phagocytes or killing infected cells to eliminate reservoirs of infection. 2 effector responses generated to deal with intracellular pathogens (Tc prod^n and DTH responses)
