Protozoa Flashcards
Name three diseases caused by protozoa
Malaria
Sleeping sickness (Trypanosome)
Toxoplasmosis
Outline the process of membrane infolding
Part of the plasma membrane folds back into the cells cytoplasm
Outline the process of endosymbiosis
Small prokaryotic cells are enveloped by larger prokaryotic cells (which provide them with nutrients and protection), the small cells develop into mitochondria and chloroplasts and gain a symbiotic relationship with the host cell.
Outline the 5 classifications of protozoa
Ciliates
- small cilia cover the cell, they are used for feeding and movement
Amoeba
- move via a plasma gel
Euglena
- have choloroplasts and a flagella
Primitive algae
- unicellular, used in carbon fixing, used in forensic investigations
Slime moulds
- single celled when there are sufficient nutrients, aggregate into colonies when there are not
