Proteins Flashcards
What do proteins do?
They do all sorts of reactions and have all sorts of purpose.
What is the monomer of a protein?
Amino Acids
What bonds occur between Amino Acid Structures?
Peptide Bonds occur through a dehydration reaction which creates water
What is a polypeptide chain?
Proteins primary Structure
What is confirmation?
When polypeptide chain folds into a three dimensional shape.
What does the sequence of amino acids tell us about proteins?
The order of amino acids determine the structure/function of the protein.
How many types of amino acids are there
20 amino acids
How can you tell if a molecule is an amino acid?
Amino Acid bonded to a carboxyl
What are the identifying atoms/combination of atoms?
Hydrogen Oxygen Nitrogen and Carbon
What is the chemical suffix used for naming Structural proteins?
end in “in”
What is the chemical suffix used for enzymes?
end in “ase”
What are the monomers (amino acids) used to form?
Amino Acids are used to form polypeptides which are then used to form proteins.
How do peptide bonds form?
dehydration reactions
What has to happen to the polypeptide chain in order for it to be a protein?
confirmation
Which foods test positive for protein?
Meats, Lagoons, dairy, grain, eggs, etc.
Do we ever see amino acids alone in foods?
no.
Out of the 20 amino acids how many are ESSENTIAL to survive?
8 are essential ; why vegetarians need to eat certain foods to get these amino acids.
