Lipids Flashcards
What are lipids?
Lipids are fats, used for LONG TERM Energy STORAGE. They are long chains of Hydrocarbons. NOT TRUE POLYMERS
Saturated Fatty - Acid
Non-Polar ; contains a carboxyl group making the molecule ACIDIC.
- Straight/Linear = Saturated (can stack)
- Solid At Room Temp
- Animal Fat / Butter / Lard
Unsaturated Fatty Acid
Consists of a double Bond : kinking the molecule, creating a tail.
- Liquid @ room Temp.
- Vegetable Oil, Fish Oil, Etc.
- Healthier b/c it is liquid at room temp.
Why are saturated fats unhealthy?
Because they are solid at room temp allowing them to stack and eventually clog arteries making humans prone to heart attacks and heart issues.
What bonds occur in lipids?
Ester Bonds
What do lipids consist of?
A Glycerol Head & Carboxyl’s
- Ester Bonds, and dehydration reactions occur.
Where do we store fat?
We store fat in Adipose tissue (Yellow Tissue)
How can we identify Steroids?
4 fused rings
What is the polarity of Steroids?
Non-Polar
What are some examples of steroids?
Hormonal (sex hormones) : Testosterone & Estrogen
What do steroids start out as?
Cholesterol
What does the structure of a phospholipid contain?
A glycerol head which is polar and fatty acid tails which are non-polar and have a kink(double bond) to some.
Phospholipid Membrane
Contains Polar heads that face the outside to interact with water and other molecules. Tails on the inside are non-polar. Some tails are kinked to allow fluidity in membrane doe movement. phospholipid membranes are Amphipathic : Polar & Non-polar at the same time.
