Proteins🦾🦿 Flashcards
What are proteins?
Refers to the complex organic molecules made up of amino acids that are folded into specific 3D structures
Give some examples?
Enzymes
Keratin (structural protein)
Insulin
Antibodies
Transport protein
Haemoglobin
ATP
Now talk about enzyme, antibodies, transport protein and keratin in detail.
Enzyme:acts as catalyst to chemical reaction with lower activation energy without being used up
Antibodies:fight pathogens as part of immune response
Transport protein: protein that transport molecules and ions through cell membrane
Keratin:it is structural protein found in hair and connective tissues like fingernails
What is a amino acids formed up of?
It starts off with the backbone of carbon and hydrogen bond and then amine group (NH2) and carboxylic acids (COOH) and R represent a side chain, they are 20 different amino’s acids and they all different by their side chain group.
How is a dipeptide formed?
Condensation of 2 amino acids
What does the condensation of 2 amino acids form?
Forms a peptide bond
What type of chemical reaction joins together 2 amino acids?
Condensation reaction forming water and to break down protein it goes through hydrolysis
