Protein Flashcards
What are proteins made of
Amino acids
Are proteins macronutrients or micronutrients
Macronutrients
Amino acids are linked together by
Peptide links
Elemental composition
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
Nitrogen
What happens to protein when we eat it
When we eat it the protein is digested. During digestion the amino acids are separated and the peptide links are broken
Classification of protein
High biological value protein
Low biological value protein
High biological value protein
. Contains all the essential amino acids
. Animal sources(soya beans an exception)eg. Meat, eggs, cheese
. Essential amino acids are the proteins the body can’t make
Low biological value protein
. Does not contain all essential amino acids
. Plant sources eg. Peas, beans, nuts
Functions of protein
Growth
Repair of damaged cells
Production of hormones and enzymes
Het and energy(only if their is not enough energy foods in the diet
How much protein should adults get a day
1g of protein for every kg they weigh
