Protein Flashcards
What is the composition of protein?
Protein is made up of amino acids and peptide links, which all together is called a polypeptide link.
Are Proteins macronutrients or micronutrients?
Proteins are macronutrients.
What is the elemental composition of protein?
The elements in protein are Carbon, Hydrogen, Oxygen and Nitrogen (C.H.O.N). Protein is the only nutrient with Nitrogen in it. Nitrogen is needed for growth.
What groups is protein classified into?
Protein is classified into High Biological Value protein and Low Biological Value protein.
What is the difference between High Biological Value protein and Low Biological Value protein?
High Biological Value protein has ALL the essential amino acids and Low Biological Value protein dosen’t.
What are essential amino acids?
Essential amino acids are amino acids that we need but our bodies can’t make them so we have to get them from food.
Where do you get High Biological Value protein from?
You get it from animal sources, eg: meat, fish, eggs, milk/dairy, Quorn (a meat substitute for vegetarians. Made from fungi) . The only exception is Soya beans.
Where do you get Low Biological Value protein from?
You get from plant sources, eg: peas, beans, lentials, nuts, whole cereals, museli.
What is the function of protein?
Protein helps you to grow, repair damaged body parts, produces hormones and enzymes, gives you energy if there is not enough energy in your diet.
What is the deficiency disease if you don’t eat enough protein?
No specific deficiency disease but if you do not have enough protein it can not complete its job in your body.
What is the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) of protein?
The RDA of protein is one gram of protein for every kilogram you weigh.
Explain the term “amino acids”
Amino acids are protein in its simplest form.
Explain the term “Function”.
Function is what the nutrient does in your body.
