Fats Flashcards
What is the elemental composition of Fats?
The elemental composition of Fats is CHO:
Carbon
Hydrogen
Oxygen
What is the composition of Fats?
The composition of Fats is one glycerol molecule and three fatty acids.
What two groups are Fats classified into?
Saturated Fats and Unsaturated Fats.
What are Saturated Fats?
A type of Fat gotten from animal sources, eg: Butter, meat, milk, cream, cheese, eggs, suet(animal fat).
What are Unsaturated Fats?
Unsaturated Fats are a type of fat that is gotten from plant and marine (fish) sources, eg: Sunflower oil, olive oil, nuts, seeds, polyunsaturated margarine (Flora), fish oils (cod liver oil) and oily fish (mackerel, salmon)
What is the function of Fats?
Fat gives you heat and energy, vitamins A, D, E and K, it insulates the body, it protects delicate organs, it gives you a feeling of fullness and it delays the feeling of hunger.
Explain the term “glycerol”.
Glycerol is a molecule attached to three fatty acids and it is one part of the Fat structure.
Explain the term “fatty acid”.
Fatty acids are Fat in its simplest form.
Explain the term “saturated fat”.
Saturated fat is a type of fat that is gotten from animal sources, eg:
eggs, meat, milk, cream, suet(animal fat).
Explain the term “unsaturated fat”.
Unsaturated fat is a type of fat that can be gotten from plant and marine(fish) sources, eg: salmon, mackerel, sunflower oil, olive oil, polyunsaturated margarine(eg: Flora).
Are Fats macronutrients or micronutrients?
Fats are macronutrients.
What does the term “Classification” mean?
Classification means breaking something up into groups.
