What is the composition of carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates are made up of simple sugars, eg: glucose. The simple sugars can be linked together to form starch.

Carbohydrates are macronutrients.
What is the elemental composition of carbohydrates?
The elements of carbohydrates are Carbon, Hydrogen and Oxygen (C.H.O).
What groups are carbohydrates classified into?
Carbohydrates are classified into three groups, Sugars, Starches and Dietary Fibre.
Where can you get Sugars from?
You can get sugars from fruit (fresh or dried), milk, cakes, biscuits, soft drinks, jam, ice-cream, honey, sugar.
Where can you get Starches from?
You can get Starches form cereals, potatoes, root vegetables, pluse vegetables.
Where can you get Dietary Fibre from?
You can get Dietary Fibre from vegetables, fruit, brown bread, brown rice, wholemeal foods.
What is the function of carbohydrates?
Sugars and Starches give you heat and energy. Dietary fibre helps the movement of food through our bodies and gives us a feeling of fullness.

How does fibre work in the body?
When we eat fibre it absorbs water and becomes bulky. As it moves through our body it causes a muscular movement called Peristalsis. The fibre along with the muscles pushes food and unwanted waste out of the body.
What is the function of fibre?
Fibre prevents constipation and other bowl disorders.
What does the term “Composition” mean?
Composition is what the nutrient is made of.
