How long is copyright designs and patents act last for?
50 years on sound recordings and 70 years on cover to literary, dramatic musical etc
What are unreigistered design rights?
Provide protection for designs so that they cannot be copied and apply for ten years (and cover the appearance of the product) e.g. shape and material and do not cover how the product works
The use of the copyright symbol does what? What does the symbol also incorporate?
Ensures that someone’s work can not be copied and that the dispute over ownership is not done. The year of publication and the owners name of the work
What additional steps can be made with copyright infringement?
Adding a meta data, keeping early drafts of sketches and having a watermark on the designs and any sketches made
How long do patents last for?
They last for 20 years
Give examples of what patents cover?
Suspension of a car, curiosity board in an electronic product
What are the requirements for a patent Design? Who comes to check the product and why?
Must be a new Desing or a Desing which is completely improved from the last. A patent officer would come to check the product prior to accreditations to conduct checks to ensure that the product follows these requirements
What are patent submissions?
Work which is submitted to the IPO and is expensive + complicated. You must have some drawings which are labelled and their function
How long does registered designs last for?
25 years of new illustrations and appearances etc
What does the registration of a trademark allow the brand to do?
Right to sell and license their brand
Use of the TM symbol alongside their brand
Take legal action against counterfeiters and any other fakes
In open Desing what is available?
Free cad models and products as well as manuals + circuit boards
Why is a Creative Commons licence normally given?
Given for open Design to ensure that the original designer ratings the IP of the idea and the right to be acknowledged as the originator of the design with allowing others to have the freedom to bully on their input too
