1.4 Wood Wasting Processes And Forming Processes…. Flashcards
Wasting processes are used for shaping wood, there are common ways that include: turning routing and milling
What is wood turning?
In losses using a wooden lathe and works in three different ways to help shape wood in different scenario’s these three methods include: between centre, turning on a faceplate and turning in a chuck
What is Turing between centres used for?
Used to create spindles for chair legs. The lathe enables the diameter to be altered and reduced. Normally done by hand used large chisels known as scrapers.
It held on a tool rest and the chisel is moved in and out along the length of the spindle to control the depth of diameter wanted
What is turning on a faceplate? And a chuck?
Used to machine objects like domes or bowls. Using a thick piece of timer to a faceplate where it can be machined to turn the outside and to remove the inside too make a bowl shape
The use of chuck can help with grip while its being machined
The chucks can be used to turn on the sides and inside of the wood
What is routing wood used for?
Used to create slots and holes in the wood or to make decorative mouldings on the edges.
The most common type of routing machine is an electric plunge router - they contain many different routing bits depending on the desired effect. A range of accessories like a fence can be used to continuously produce grooves along the price of timber
What is the benefit of routing in terms of manufacturing?
Can be used with CNC machining with a range of materials and natural timbers e.g. HDMF
CAD drawings can also be transferred onto CNC machines to make use of designs with routing + 2D drawings as well to create flat pack furniture e.g.
What is milling for wood?
A way to shape woods in a quite slow process for accuracy. However they can be sued for small scale productions and prototypes. They also don’t have a range of movement and can be used as a CNC. They can be operated manually or by computer
What are forming processes used for?
Used to change the shape of timber/other materials or manufactured boards. For woods there are two main methods: steam beaning and laminating
What is steam bending?
Combined heat and steam enables strips of timber to be made pliable and shaped over a former.
Involves putting the wood in a steam box where the timber will absorb the steam to become weakened until it dries.
what are the advances of steam bending compared to laminating?
It is quicker and less wasteful because laminated parts usually require trimming to final size to do so
What is lamination?
The process of boding materials together. Like wood veneers or thing manufactured wood boards like 3mm plywood glued together over a former. While drying the laminates may be held in place with clamps/or a vacuum bag
What is done using a vacuum bag for laminating?
Veneers are placed under a polythene sheet and the edges of the sheet are taped down to the table. A valve is fitted to the polymer sheet and the vacuum sucks air out the pressure pills the laminate together and ensures no gaps are produced in the laminate
