1.4 The Use Of Adhseives And Fixings Flashcards
Wat is PVA
Most commonly known as PVA and i used to join woods together especially dowel joints
It soaks into the surface of wood and sets once the woods absorbs all the water content
Widely used in indoor furniture products and is not usually waterproof but some are
What is contact adhesive?
Used to connect different boards of sheet material together and can include metal to wood or wood to wood etc
It is left for 10 mins to cure or until it feels tacky
On contact with the other surface is instant and so clamping is not needed
Most commonly used when a large surface area needs gluing e.g. MF boards
What is a UV hardening adhesive?
As it absorbs uv wavelengths the adhesive will begin to cure and a solid bond is formed
Often used for projects using polymers and lighting
One advantage of uv adhesive is that it can be wiped away with a cloth prior to using uv light giving a clear finish
It also has a fast curing time unlike expoy resin and doesn’t need to be mixed to harden the application
Used where transparency is important e.g. glass to glass
What is solvent cement?
Used to join polymers like acrylic and ABS and PVC
It works by softening the surface of polymers to be joined allowing them to fuse together
Most commonly used in the plumbing industry to bond non-pressure pipes made from ABS or in school for acrylic
What does a jig do?
Both holds and and guides a tool and can be used for accuracy and repetitiveness in manufacturing
E.g. drilling jig which might be used for for drilling into multiple pieces of sheet material each time
Mitre jigs can be used for cutting wood at 45 degrees
What are router jigs?
Used with jigs to help shape wood accurately and consistently. And may be typically used to angle a metrial in a fixed position
