Protease inhibitors Flashcards
What drug agents make up the protease inhibitor group?
- Lopinavir
- Atazanavir (used when lopinavir is not welll tolerated)
- Darunavir
- Saquinavir
- Ritonavir ( acts as a booster- 100 ml dose increase concentration of the other protease inhibitors-reducing the pill burden)
What’s the administration route of protease inhibitors?
- Oral route
*They’re well absorbed with food.
Any CSF penetration?
No, poor
What’s the metabolic pathway of protease inhibitors?
Cytochrome P450
What’s are the side effects of using Atazanavir (ATV)?
- Jaundice
- gall stones
- nephrotoxicity
What’s are the side effects of using Lopinavir?
- GI disturbance (hyperglycaemia)
- Lipid disturbances (dyslipidemia)
- atherosclerosis
What’s are the side effects of using Darunavir?
- Glucose intolerance
- Rash
Which 2 protease inhibitors interact with warfarin? What are the outcomes from this?
Atazanavir and Darunavir
*They both decrease International Normalised Ratio of wafarin (INR)
-Meaning they decrease warfarin levels in blood and result in clot formation)
A protease inhibitor that prolongs the QT and PR intervals
Saquinavir
