What do PSA labs test for?
male patient to determine if they have prostate cancer.
What do PSA labs measure?
measures the amount of a protein produced by the prostate gland in the bloodstream.
Why are PSA tests done before DRE tests?
a rise in PSA can occur due to the irritation that occurs upon palpation of the gland.
A sample of blood is used to determine the PSA level
PSA: An increase can indicate
client has prostatic cancer or prostatitis.
PSA levels increase with
age.
For a male younger than 50 years of age,
PSA level of 2.5 ng/mL is within the expected range.

for up to 6 weeks following a urinary tract infection
PSA value greater than 4 ng/mL
requires further evaluation.
An elevated PSA is an indication of a number of conditions
including prostate cancer, BPH, and acute prostatitis.
