Nurovascular Checks Flashcards
When are neuromuscular assessments essential?
Throughout immobilization
How frequently are neuromuscular checks done?
Every hour for first 24 hr
every 1-4 hr after
What are you assessing for with neuromuscular
Pain level, location, frequency.
what scale is used for neurovascular checks?
0-10, describe the pain, locate pain
What do you do to alleviate pain
immobilize, ice, and elevate, analgesics
Sensation assessment
Numbness of tingling of extremity.
Loss of sensation=nerve damage
Skin temp
Check temp of extremity.
Should be: warm, not cool
cool=decreased arterial perfusion
Capillary refill:
press until blanching, let go
blood returns <3 sec
Prolonged=decresed arterial perfusion
nail beds are cyanotic can indicate venous congestion
Pulses
Should be: palpable and strong should be equal to the unaffected extremity
should not be: edema=doppler ultrasound
movement
be able to move extremity
Vascular health
high protein/calcium to facilitate bone healing
blood loss=iron rich foods
