What does Digoxin Treat?
Treatment for heart failure.
Dysrhythmias
–>reduces manifestations of these but will not prolong these.
What does Digoxin Do?
Slows Sinoatrial Node depolarization
-works through the conduction of the heart
-decreases HR
-gives ventricles more fill time
Digoxin leads to:
Increased SV (systolic volume) and CO (cardiac output)
What complications can digoxin give?
Toxicity: 0.5-0.8
Potassium: can cause hypokalemia
(3.5-5 K levels)
Blood levels are tested
Signs of Toxicity:
nausea, vomiting, general weakness
What is prescribed with Digoxin
Potassium supplements
What happens if potassium levels fall?
Potassium sparing diuretic
consume high potassium foods
monitor pulse rate
What are potassium rich foods?
green leafy veggies.
bananas
potatoes
What should you report when someone is taking Digoxin?
Anorexia
nausea
vomiting
abdominal pain
fatigue
weakness
vision changes
(blurred vision, haloes-green yellow)
What are contraindications and precautions about digoxin toxicity?
Pregnancy risk C
Clients w/ventricular problems
third degree heart block
caution with pt.’s that have hypokalemia, partial AV block, advanced heart failure, impaired kidney function
What should you do before giving digoxin?
Check pulse rate-if lower than 60 do not administer
if less than 70 for kids do not even think about it
if less than 90/min infants don’t you dare
