Proprioception assessment of either UL or LL Flashcards

1
Q

What is the purpose of the technique i.e. what are you measuring and why?

A

Assess awareness of the position of muscles in space direction of movement and forces generated by muscles

Necessary for efficient movement and function

Q

How do you know whether the measurement is normal?

A

Mirroring - accurate replication of movement

Specific joint - accurately identify limb position

Q

Explain the process of mirroring

A

Mirroring - ability to replicate a movement
1) Patient comfortable, explain procedure, informed consent
2) ask patient to close eyes
3) position upper and lower limb into a certain posture
4) ask patient to copy with other limb.
Limit point of contact to reduce somatosensory input, multi joint assessment, position weak limb and ask for it to be replicated by non-weak

Q

Explain the process of specific joint testing

A

Specific joint - identifying position of limb
1) Patient comfortable, explain procedure, informed consent
2) show patient movement (bent/straight)
3) ask patient to close eyes
4) hold joint @ sides to avoid pressure in direction of movement
5) passively flex or extend joint and ask patient to identify its position
8) randomise position so its not predictable
9) quickly bend and straighten in midrange to avoid predictability
10) progress from gross to more finer movements (like higher or lower but more or less bent)
