Basal Chest Expansion Flashcards
What is the purpose of the technique i.e. what are you measuring and why?
Assess respiratory muscle functioning
Expansion capacity of thorax
Breathlessness (dyspnoea)
Reduced exercise tolerance
Abnormal lung function test results in a wide range of pathologies
How do you know whether the measurement is normal?
Compare to previous / norms data
What principles are used in carrying out (application) the technique?
- Place tape around chest wall in line with the xiphoid process. Ensure that tape is not twisted and is in parallel both anteriorly and posteriorly.
- Place a visible mark to indicate tape position.
- Take measurement on full expiration.
- Holding tape in position, ask the model to breathe in as much as they can to full
inspiration. - Take the measurement at full inspiration.
- Calculate the difference.
- Using your mark as a guide, repeat stages 3 – 5 twice, until you have 3 measurements of expiration and inspiration
RECORD LARGEST MEASUREMENT & compare to norms data
What structures/processes are being assessed?
Inspiration & exhalation - lung capacity
Precautions / contraindications
Acute respiratory condition
Acute disorders affecting test performance (e.g. vomiting, nausea, vertigo)
Unstable cardiac problems
Thoracic trauma
Do you have any heart or lung (cardiorespiratory) issues I should be aware of?
Are you feeling well in yourself?
Have you recently suffered any injuries affecting your chest?
What should be documented?
Date, Time, Patient name
Explanation of procedure & gaining informed consent
Landmarks used for measurement
RECORD LARGEST MEASUREMENT of the 3 & compare to norms data
