Oxford Muscle Grading Flashcards

1
Q

What is the purpose of the technique i.e. what are you measuring and why?

A

When there is a mismatch between how much we use the muscle and what it is designed for = weakness.
Individuals may have and inability to produce
sufficient force. The impact of this on the
individual is that they may complain that they
cannot undertake activities and we can use said activities to give insight

OMG measures weakness on a scale of 0-5.

Weakness & pain may indicate injury

Assess to gain a baseline or to check for progress

Q

How do you know whether the measurement is normal?

A

Compare to normal opposite limb

Most healthy individuals will have grade 4/5 strength

Q

What principles are used in carrying out (application) the technique?

A

1) explain procedure & informed consent
2) Ensure muscle group is clearly visible
3) Observe & palpate muscle group, compare one to the other

Grades
1 - visible contraction, no movement
2 - movement through full range w/o gravity
3 - movement through full range against gravity, supportive handling
4 - movement through full range against gravity & some resistance
5 - movement through full range against gravity & full resistance

Q

How would this be documented?

A

Date, Time, Patient name
Explanation of procedure & gaining informed consent
Record muscle group and grade and how you resisted. And that of opposite limb
Check for adverse affects
Sign
