Oxford Muscle Grading Flashcards
What is the purpose of the technique i.e. what are you measuring and why?
When there is a mismatch between how much we use the muscle and what it is designed for = weakness.
Individuals may have and inability to produce
sufficient force. The impact of this on the
individual is that they may complain that they
cannot undertake activities and we can use said activities to give insight
OMG measures weakness on a scale of 0-5.
Weakness & pain may indicate injury
Assess to gain a baseline or to check for progress
How do you know whether the measurement is normal?
Compare to normal opposite limb
Most healthy individuals will have grade 4/5 strength
What principles are used in carrying out (application) the technique?
1) explain procedure & informed consent
2) Ensure muscle group is clearly visible
3) Observe & palpate muscle group, compare one to the other
Grades
1 - visible contraction, no movement
2 - movement through full range w/o gravity
3 - movement through full range against gravity, supportive handling
4 - movement through full range against gravity & some resistance
5 - movement through full range against gravity & full resistance
What structures/processes are being assessed?
Muscle function and strength
Precautions / contraindications
Unstable coronary heart disease
Uncompensated heart failure
Severe pulmonary hypertension
Uncontrolled arrhythmias
Uncontrolled hypertension (>180/110mmHg)
Marfan’s syndrome
Severe symptomatic aortic stenosis
Aortic dissection
Acute myocarditis, pericarditis or endocarditis
Acute muscle injury
Acute fracture
Major risk factors for coronary heart disease
Diabetes
Hypertension above 160/100mmHg
Musculoskeletal problems
Pacemakers
Retinopathy
Peripheral neuropathy
Are there any injuries in this area I should be aware of like a fracture?
Do you have any heart or lung (cardiovascular) conditions such as hypertension?
Are you feeling well in yourself?
How would this be documented?
Date, Time, Patient name
Explanation of procedure & gaining informed consent
Record muscle group and grade and how you resisted. And that of opposite limb
Check for adverse affects
Sign
What is meant by grade 1?
visible contraction, no movement

movement through full range without gravity
What is meant by grade 3?
Movement through full range with gravity
What is meant by grade 4?
Movement through full range with gravity and some resistance
What is meant by grade 5?
Movement through full range against gravity and full resistance.
