Prokaryotic cells Flashcards
nucleoid structure
one molecule of DNA - a super coiled ( and therefore compact) chromosome
ribosomes
smaller than those in eukaryotic cells
cell wall function
acts as an extra layer of protection, prevents dehydration, helps cell maintain shape
cell wall structure
made of peptidoglan (foamed form amino acids and sugars - complex polymer)
capsule function and structure
enables the cell to attack to surfaces surrounding it
made of polysaccharide
flagella function
locomotion - energy to rotate the filament (that becomes the flagellum) comes from chemiosmosis
flagella structure
is attacked to the cell membrane by a basal body and is rotated by a molecular motor
prokaryotic cell DNA formation
supercoiled DNA strandswrap around histone proteins to form chromatin which coils and condenses to form chromosomes
