MICROSCOPES Flashcards
Laser Scanning Microscopes
> can be used for living samples
produces a high contrast
can take images at different depths to create 3D images
used mainly in medicine + biomedical research
max resolution = 100 nm
max magnification = 1000 + 1000<
Scanning Electron Microscopes
> only used on dead samples
black + white images produced - ‘false colour’ can be added
can only view the surface of the cell
sample has to be coated with metal + viewed in a vacuum
max resolution = 3nm
max magnification = 200,000
Transmission Electron Microscope
> dead samples
black + white images - can add ‘false colour’
can view cross sections of cells
samples have to be treated with a chemical fixative + sliced into very thin pieces
max resolution = 1nm
max magnification = 500,000
Light Microscope
> max magnification = 1500
max resolution = 200nm
coloured images
can view live samples
can only view cell surface
two lenses - objective lens + eyepiece lens for a higher resolution
