Eukaryotic Cells Flashcards
Nucleus function
contains DNA which directs the synthesis of all proteins in the cell
nucleolus function
responsible for producing ribosomes
mitochondria function
the site of the final stages of cellular respiration - production of ATP
Vesicle function
transport materials inside the cell
lysosome function
break down waste materials in cells
smooth endoplasmic reticulum function
lipid and carbohydrate synthesis, storage
rough endoplasmic reticulum function
synthesis and transport of proteins
ribosomes function
protein synthesis
Golgi apparatus function
modifying proteins and packaging them into vesicles
microfilaments function
responsible for cell movement + cell contraction during cytokinesis
microtubules function
make up spindle fibres, act as tracks for movement of organelles, polymerise to form tubes that are used to create structure to determine the shape of a cell
intermediate fibres function
give mechanical strength to cells + help cells to maintain their integrity
nucleus structure
doubled membrane called a nuclear envelope - has nuclear pores - for protection + contains the nucleolus
mitochondria structure
double membrane, folded inner membrane forms cristae, fluid = matrix, own DNA
RER structure
network of interconnected membranes forming cisternae (flattened sacs) , studded with ribosomes
