Prokaryotes Flashcards
Define- prokaryote
A simple molecular mechanism that’s very small and it’s formed of bacteria
What does the cell wall do for a prokaryote?
Protective coating can be Gram positive/negative
What does the plasma membrane do for prokaryotes?
Controls entry/exit of substances
What does the pilli do for the prokaryotes?
Attachment, transfer for DNA
What does the cytoplasm do the prokaryotes?
Contains enzymes for metabolism
What does the nucleiod do a prokaryote?
Region containing that makes up the DNA (which also contains plasmid)
What do the ribosomes do for the prokaryotes?
Protein synthesis, high protein production
What does the flagellum do for the prokaryotes?
Allows movement for the cell
What is Binary fission?
When a cell divides into two then becomes two separate cells
State that prokaryotic cells divide by binary fission
Prokaryotic cells copy the DNA and split into two becoming “twin” cells since the cells are identical. They are known as “daughter cells” because they are clones because they each have the same DNA sets
Difference between transmission electron microscope and a scanning electron microscope
Transmission is when electrons go through a electron gun and goes through a florescent screen making the pictures come out flat and 2D. Scanning electron microscope has electrons go through an electron gun the test subject has a very fine layer if gold making the pictures come out very detailed and 3D
What’s the size of a prokaryote?
1-3 um
What does the prokaryote mean?
Pro “before” karyote “nucleus”
Does the prokaryote have organelles?
No, they are membrane bound. Meaning they have a membrane just around the cell itself
Does binary fission result in exponential growth?
Yes, as time increase, the rate if growth of the population increases (until there are no more resources for extra growth)
