Enzymes Flashcards
Define substrate
Reactant in a bio chemical reaction
Define enzyme
Globular protein which acts as a catalyst for bio chemical reactions
Define active site
Region on the surface of an enzyme to which substrates bin a. Which catalysts the reaction
What dose it mean when a reaction is catalysed?
A substrate has been locked into the active site
Name the 2 different enzymes
Catabolic an anabolic
What us the lock-and-key model?
The substrate and the active site match each other in two ways: structurally and chemically
What does it mean when the enzyme and active match each other structurally?
The 3D structured of the active site is specific to the substrate. Substrates that don’t fit won’t react.
What does it mean when the substrate and the active site match chemically?
Substrates that are not chemically attracted to the active site won’t be able to react.
Is the lock-and-key model a good hypothesis?
NO!!!!
What is a better model than the lock-and-key model? Why?
The induced for model because it better explains the enzymes activity
What would happen if the lock-and-key model were true?
One enzyme would only catalyze one reaction
Describe what happens in the induced it model
As the substrate approaches the enzyme, it induces a conformational change in the active site to fit the substrate. This stresses the substrate, reducing the activation energy of the reaction.
