Prokaryotes 1 Flashcards
Prokaryote features
cell wall plasma membrane cytoskeleton plasmid flagella fimbriae pili
What is a plasmid used for?
small chromosome used for replication
-can be transferred to another prokaryote
What is the fimbriae used for?
adhesive pilli
-cell adhesion
What is the pilus used for?
elongated thread that draws cells together during conjugation
-can send plasmid though to other prokaryote
Cell division is usually done by what?
Binary fission
What are the three types of genetic recombination?
transformation
transduction
conjugation
what is transformation?
DNA from the environment is taken up through the membrane
What is transduction?
DNA is moved by a viral vector
What is conjugation?
DNA is transferred from a donor cell to a recipient cell using a pilus
3 shapes of bacteria
spere: cocci
rods: bacilli
spiral
gram positive cell wall
(purple) simple wall, large amount of peptidoglycan
gram negative cell wall
(pink) complex wall, less peptidoglycan, outer layer of lipopolysachharides
What features do prokaryotes lack?
mitochondria
ER
golgi complex
chloroplasts
