Ch 3 Flashcards
What is Evolutionary Development?
Contain “gene families” that have been identified that control development
- hox genes
- MADS genes
Changes in developmental genes may result in what?
Large scale developmental changes
What are the 4 types of large scale developmental changes
- Heterochrony
- Homeosis
- Allometric Growth
- Examption
What is Heterochrony?
Change in development that leads to change in timing
-retaining juvenile characteristics (gills staying, no metamorphosis)
What is Homeosis?
Change in spatial positioning within the organism
-forming a body part where something else should be
What is Allometric Growth?
Change in the rate of growth within the organism
-one thing grown faster/slower than in other similar species
What is Examption?
Process where variations in a trait become adaptive for a different purpose
-birds: formerly reptiles (scales into feathers)
