Programming, Project Assesment and Sustainability Flashcards
What is a parti diagram?
parti diagram is a rough drawing, doodle, or diagram used early in the schematic design process to represent a design concept. The classic “napkin sketch”.
Note that a design parti, is not necessarily a diagram. The word is from the French phrase parti pris, meaning to make a decision. A Pinterest board use to present design concepts can be a parti
What is a circulation multipler?
the “net” area (programmed space on the floor) divided by the “circulation area” (which you will have to calculate off the plan)
it is almost always a number “one” with decimals
What is circulation area?
the space in the plan that is NOT specifically called out in the program.
It’s basically all the circulation in the plan
What is circulation factor?
the “circulation area” divided by the USF (usable square feet) of the space.
For example, what the landlord tells you. It is the USEABLE (not rentable) squarefeet of the space you are using.
The factor is always a percentage number (##%)
the factor is telling you how efficent the layout of the space is.
What is efficiency factor?
When estimating efficiency factors, the designer must allow for non-programmed areas. (circulation, walls, restrooms, service areas.)
What are the four main considerations when it comes to programming?
Form, Economy, Function, Time
Form: Priority, hierarchy, density, spatial requirements, occupancy classification
Economy: Budget
Function: Establishing goals, collecting data, sustainability, code compliance, anthropometrics and ergonomics, suitability, communication
Time: Lead Time
Describe Type I & Type II construction
Building materials are of noncombustible materials
Describe Type III construction
Exterior walls are of noncombustible materials. Interior walls are of any permitted by code
Describe Type IV construction
Exterior walls are of noncombustible materials. Interior building elements are wood, such as solid or laminated wood or heavy timber
Describe Type V construction
Structural materials, exterior and interior are of any material permitted by code
What is occupancy classification?
is based on a space usage and risks or hazards. How people would react and exit in the case of an emergency.
Usually refers to an entire building
What is occupancy type?
usually refers to individual spaces in a building
What are the number of exits in a building determined by?
The number of exits is based on the occupant load of the space or building.
*if determining the required number of exits for an entire building, the occupant load must be calculated for each floor or story
What are four ways to promote movement through active design?
- Make pathways and stairs accessible from high-traffic routes
- Benches, drinking fountains, and water bottle refilling stations along walk routes
- Provide showers and changing rooms
- Make active workstations (standing desks and treadmills)
What is resilience
The ability of an organization, place, or family to weather a catastrophic event and come back better than before
