Definition of “mental abilities”
Abilities that are psychological in nature and are related to the practice of psychology
Definition of “neuropsychological functioning”
Psychological manifestations of brain functioning
Includes sensory motor functioning, attention, concentration, memory, language, abstraction, problem solving, visual spatial abilities, executive functioning, and personality
Definition of “neuropsychology”
Subspecialty of psychology concerned with the relationship between the brain and behavior
Includes the diagnosis of brain pathology through the use of psychological tests and assessment techniques
Definition of “psychological testing”
Use of assessments to measure mental abilities, personality, or neuropsychological functioning; and diagnose or render opinions regarding mental or nervous disorders
Definition of “practice of psychology”
To render to a persons or group, any service involving recognized principles of psychology
Board members (numbers and elections)
Six board members, 5 psychologists and one member of the public
Board members serve five-year terms, the president and VP are elected annually
Vacancies are filled by the governor
The Board (meetings and authority)
At least one meeting per year
Authority to establish codes of conduct, administer oaths, summon witnesses, issue licenses
Board (removal)
Members can be removed after notice and hearing for incompetence, neglect of duty, malfeasance, or other commission of moral turpitude crime
You cannot practice or use the term “psychologist” (or imply it), with a few exceptions…
If you’re a school psychologist (you don’t need a license)
If you’re teaching or doing research (you can call yourself a psychologist)
If you’re licensed in another state and only practicing in GA without a license for 30 days or fewer
Religious organizations and the term “psychologist”
Religious organizations can give counseling services, but cannot call themselves psychologists
What do you need to show/demonstrate to the board to get a license?
Good moral character
Completed applied psychology degree
At least 2 years of experience
Competent to practice (as judged by passing exams…EPPP, juris, oral)
Have not failed an exam in the last six months
Reciprocity
If another state has similar or higher standards, applicant can get a GA license after passing written and oral exams
How often are licenses renewed
Biennially
Every two years
Reasons the Board can refuse/suspend/revoke a license
Fraud or deception, felony conviction or moral turpitude crime, impersonation or practicing under false name, habitual intemperance of alcohol or drugs, neglect, other 43-1-19 violations
Profess for revocation or suspension of license
If reasonable belief exists, board can force you to submit to a mental health or physical exam (and results are admissible in a board hearing, refusal to provide results in suspension)
Have to have a hearing if the revocation is due to lack of good moral character
You can appeal
