Production - articulatory descriptions Flashcards
What is the mnemonic for articulatory descriptions
A -airstream
Very - Velum
Vocal - Vocal folds
Gladiator - Glottis
Vies - Voicing
Articulatory - Articulators
For - flow of air
Love - length
How do you describe the airstream on all standard english words
The word is produced on a pulmonic eggressive airstream, where air flows out of the lungs and through the vocal tract, and out of either the oral cavity or nasal cavities.
If a word is nasal is the velum lowered or raised?
The velum is lowered, opening up the nasal cavity and oral cavity, and air flows into both, however the articulators (PoA) create a complete closure in the oral cavity, meaning air escapes soley via the nasal cavity
If a sound is voiced, what are the vocal folds doing?
Held together closely but loosely, creating vibration of the vocal folds
If a sound is voiceless, what are the vocal folds doing?
Held wide apart, air flows freely out of the open glottis, causing no vibration of the vocal chords
Describe the articulators in a plosive sound
A complete closure is made by the articulators and mouth (PoA here), creating a buildup of air, which is then released by the articulators creating a stop sound - if diacritics on aspiration mention whether it is fully aspirated, partially aspirated or has no aspiration (burst of air that comes out during the period of voicelessness after the release of a stop)
Describe the articulators in a nasal sound
The velum is lowered, meaning air flows into both the oral and nasal cavities. The mouth is occluded at some point by the lips or tongue (PoA) and the airstream is expelled entirely through the nose, creating the nasal sound __
Describe the articulators in a fricative sound
produced by forcing air through a narrow channel made by articulators (PoA), so it is continually released under friction, creating the fricative sound __
Describe the articulators in an approximant sound
the articulators (PoA) approaching each other but not narrowly enough nor with enough articulatory precision to create friction
Describe the articulators in the alveolar lateral approximant ālā
the airstream is blocked by the tongue against the alveolar ridge, forcing air around the tongue laterally, creating the l sound
What is aspiration? How can it be described?
burst of air that comes out during the period of voicelessness after the release of a stop
- fully
partially
un-aspirated/ neglibly aspirated
Describe the articulators in bilabial sounds
Involving narrowing or closure of the lips
Describe the articulators in labiodental sounds
Involving the narrowing or closure of the top teeth and the bottom lip
Describe the articulators in dental sounds
involving the narrowing or closure of the upper teeth and tongue tip
Describe the articulators in alveolar sounds
Involving a narrowing or closure of the main body of the tongue and the alveolar ridge
