Process of Memory Flashcards
What is the model to explain memory
Atkinson & Shiffrin Multi-Store Memory Storage Model
Define structural features
(permanent) storage, capacity & duration of memory stores
Define • Control processes
(varies) attention, whether information is rehearsed & the retrieval of information
What is sensory memory used for
Entry point for all information in general
What is the function for sensory memory
o Stores sensory impressions temporarily
o Important information is moved to short-term memory
o E.g. remembering the parts of “temp-or-ly” to identify the word “temporarily”
What is the duration of sensory memory
o Iconic memory – visual sensory information (0.2 to 0.4 seconds)
o Echoic memory – auditory information (3 to 4 seconds)
What’s the capacity of sensory memory
• Potentially unlimited capacity
What is the function of Short-Term Memory
- Receives information from sensory or long-term memory
* Transfers info to long term over time
What is the capacity of Short-Term Memory
7±2 pieces of info
What is the duration of Short-Term Memory
• 18-20 second duration (up to 30 sec)
What is the function of Long-Term Memory
o Holds information for extremely long periods of time
What is the duration of Long-Term Memory
• Very long duration
What is the capacity of Long-Term Memory
• Potentially unlimited capacity
What are the 2 division of long-term memory
• Implicit and explicit
Define Explicit memories
aware, conscious & intentional storage of memories
Define implicit memories
no awareness/intentional retrieval
What are the 2 categories of explicit memories and explain their purpose
o Episodic – personally experienced events
Without it life would be dangerous
A human’s sense of meaning
o Semantic – facts & knowledge about the world
Without, all facts lost
What are the 2 categories of implicit memories and explain their purpose
o Procedural – (muscle memory) actions learned previously
Stores how to work, ride bike, communicate
o Classically conditioned memory – automatic response through classical conditioning
Automatic responses with emotion
What is the role of the Cerebral Cortex in long term memories
- Stores Explicit (semantic & episodic) stored in frontal & temporal
- Implicit; procedural & classical conditioned (complex) memories stored
- Memories are linked to one another (through visual, auditory & language links)
What is the role of the Cerebellum in long term memories
- Encodes implicit procedural memories
* Simple CC responses
What is the role of the Hippocampus in long term memories
• Encodes explicit memories (temporary)
What is the role of the Amygdala in long term memories
- Processes (helps form) emotional memories
* “Amy” emotional
