Neural Basis of Learning Flashcards
Define learning
a relatively permanent change in behaviour that occurs through experience involving the acquisition of skills or knowledge
define • Memory
recalling & expressing what knowledge you have acquired
define • Neural Plasticity
ability to modify neural structure & function changed through experience in the brain (brain as a whole)
Define Synaptic Plasticity
ability of the synapse to change over time
Define • Long Term Potentiation (LTP)
strengthening of the synaptic connections, enhancing synaptic transmission
Define • Long Term Depression (LTD)
decrease in strength of synaptic transmission as a result of lowered stimulation between neurons
(Neurons that fire apart wire apart )
Define • Consolidation
process of making newly formed memories stable
• Takes 30 mins to ‘to set’
If consolidaiton is disrupted, how much time of memories is lost
If disrupted, then last 30 mins are lost (e.g. concussion)
How is consolidation enhanced
• Enhanced by adrenaline & noradrenaline
Define • Neurohormones
Chemical messengers, manufactured by neurons, released from axon terminals
What is • Glutamate’s role in LTP/LTD
• Glutamate promotes growth & strengthens synaptic connections (LTP)
