Nervous System Flashcards
What are the 3 main functions of the nervous system
Reception
Information processing
Coordinating responses
2 types of responses in the nervous system and define
Conscious response - voluntary, intentional and goal directed
Unconscious response - involuntary, unintentioal and automatic
What is the Spinal Reflex
Unconscious response
Saves reaction time
How does the spinal reflex work
o Sensory receptors detect heat/sharps and sensory neuron takes message
o Goes through inter-neuron where a decision is made (and sent to the brain)
o Sends message directly to motor-neuron to move away
Role of the neuron
sense, transmit and to move
Define • Neurotransmitters
chemical substances used to communicate between neurons
What is the path Neurotransmitters take
o Vesicles (in axon terminal)
o Synaptic cleft
o Receptor cites (dendrite)
o Unused neurotransmitters are reuptaken
What is Parkinsons Diseas
Chronic and neurodegenerative disease due to lack of dopamine production (from the Substantia Nigra)
Motor symptoms of Parkinsons Diseas
o Tremors
o Muscle rigidity – stiff muscles
o Bradykinesia – slow movement
o Postural instability – bad balance
Non-motor symptoms of Motor symptoms of Parkinsons Diseas
o Speech issues
o Anosmia – loss/reduced smell
o Mental health decline
o Slowness of thinking
Treatment of Parkinsons Diseas
- Medication used to increase/mimic dopamine
* Treatment for non-motor symptoms which are pre-existing
