Printers and Multifunctional devices Flashcards
How is print resolution measured?
Dots per inch (dpi)
How is print speed measured?
Pages per minute (ppm)
What is the black toner used in laser printing made of?
carbon melt mixed with a polyester resin, while color toner trades carbon for other pigments.
What is Hard Drive Caching?
Modern devices contain a hard drive or other storage media to cache copies of what the device prints, scans, copies, or faxes.
What does the pickup roller do?
Grabs the paper.
What does the separation pad do?
Uses friction to separate a single sheet from any others that were grabbed.
What does the Fuser Assembly do?
what’s the function of the Pressure Roller and the Heated Roller?
It’s the final step of printing. It fuses the toner to the paper.
Pressure Roller- presses against the bottom of the page.
Heated Roller- Presses down on the page, melting the toner onto the paper.
What does the toner cartridge do?
Supplies the toner that creates the image on the page
What is the Imaging Drum?
An aluminum cylinder coated with particles of photosensitive compounds.
When light hits these particles, whatever electrical charge they may have “drains” out through the grounded cylinder.
What is the Erase Lamp?
The erase lamp exposes the entire surface of the photosensitive drum to light, making the photosensitive coating conductive.
Any electrical charge present in the particles bleeds away into the grounded drum, leaving the surface particles electrically neutral.
What is the Primary Corona/Charge Roller?
Enables voltage to pass to the drum and charge the photosensitive particles on its surface
When the primary corona or primary charge roller is charged with an extremely high voltage, an electric field (or corona) forms, enabling voltage to pass to the drum and charge the photosensitive particles on its surface
What is the Laser?
Writing mechanism of the printer. Writes an image onto the Drum.
What is the Toner?
A fine powder made up of plastic particles bonded to pigment particles
What is the Transfer Corona/Transfer Roller
Gives the paper a positive charge that draws the toner onto the paper
Which type of printer takes advantage of tractor feed during printing process?
Impact
What is RET, and what does it do?
Resolution Enhancement Technology.
RET enables the printer to insert smaller dots among the characters, smoothing out
the jagged curves that are typical of printers that do not use RET
Uses a portion of the printer’s RAM
What mechanism is used by most inkjet printers to push ink onto the paper?
Electroconductive plates
On a dot-matrix printer, what physically strikes the ribbon to form an image?
Printwires
What are considered to be dot-matrix printer consumables?
Ribbon, Flywheel
What part must be vacuumed or replaced periodically to prevent damage caused by the action of the corona?
The ozone filter
What printing process uses heat-sensitive plastic film embedded with various color dyes?
Dye-sublimation
What are the consumables of Impact Printers?
Paper and Ribbons
What are considered Inkjet Consumables?
Paper and Ink Cartridges
