Memory Flashcards
Why is DDR2 Ram faster than DDR Ram?
The input/output speed is faster.
What is dual channel memory?
It describes motherboard technology that doubles data throughput from Ram to the MCC.
Installed in pairs or trios for maximum data throughput.
How do you utilize Ram that uses Dual-Channel-Architecture?
Dual-Channel DDR requires two identical sticks of DDR, and they must snap into two paired slots.
What is buffered RAM?
Ram with small registers installed on memory that acts as a buffer between the DIMM and the MCC
What’s ECC?
It’s RAM that fixes errors as they occur. Slower than non-ECC
Why is SDRAM better than DRAM?
It is synchronized with the system bus.
What is PROM?
Programmable read only memory.
Written once, cannot be changed.
What is EPROM?
Erasable PROM
Can be erased and re-used.
What is EEPROM?
Electrically Erasable PROM (Flash memory, SSD)
What is the CMOS?
A separate memory chip that stores the BIOS settings
Kept charge by the CMOS battery.
What is Firmware?
Firmware is a software program or set of instructions programmed on a hardware device. It provides the necessary instructions for how the device communicates with the other computer hardware
Firmware is typically stored in the flash ROM of a hardware device.
What is Flash Memory?
Memory that retains data in absence of a power supply.
What is the system ROM?
It’s Flash ROM (ROM you can update), it enables your CPU to talk to basic hardware of your PC. It holds the BIOS for HDD’s, Display Devices, USB, etc..
What is ROM?
Read Only Memory.
It stores programs for your CPU to communicate with hardware.
Can’t be changed or erased.
What is DRAM?
Dynamic Random Access Memory.
It’s used as the main system memory. It is VOLATILE MEMORY that needs a constant refresh or it loses it’s data.
- Slower than SRAM
- Less expensive
- Used as primary storage (RAM, DIMM’s)
