Expansion Bus Specifications Flashcards
What is PCI-X used for? What’s it’s speed and characteristics?
Designed for Servers and high-end workstations
1,064 MB/s throughput
Doubles bandwidth of PCI
Backwards compatibility with PCI devices
64-bit bus width
What’s a Bus Width?
How much traffic can pass through (throughput)
How does a Parallel Bus transmit data?
Across multiple wires, Moving multiple bits simultaneously.
How does a serial Bus transmit data?
One bit at a time over a single communication channel.
What speeds does a PCI run at? Describe it’s characteristics.
133 to 533 Mbps
Parallel interface
32 and 64 bit bus width
What’s the Mini PCI used for?
Laptops
What are the Serical communication and speeds of PCIe?
Serial- x1, x2, x4, x8, x16, x32
Speed- 250 Mbps to 2 Gbps
PCIe transfers data serially, not parallel. Therefore no “32 or 64 bit” bus width.
What’s a PCIe “lane”?
A pair of wires for serial communication.. One to read, one to write. Used in PCIe architecture.
(One pair is used for transmitting data and the other pair for receiving data)
What is SATA 3.2?
It is SATAe, or SATA Express.A computer bus interface that supports both Serial ATA (SATA) and PCI Express (PCIe) storage devices
What is the speed of a single lane (x1) PCIe v1.x?
250 Mb/s
What is the speed of a single lane (x1) PCIe v2x?
500 Mb/s
What is the speed of a single lane (x1) PCIe v3.x?
985 Mb/s
What is the speed of a single lane (x1) PCIe v4.x?
1969 Mb/s
What is the speed of a quad lane (x4) PCIe v1.x?
1 Gb/s
What is a Bus?
In computer architecture, a Bus is a communication system that transfers data between components inside a computer, or between computers
