Principles and Considerations in Design Flashcards
What are dieter rams principles
Good design is:
Innovative
Aesthetic
Unobstructive
Honest
Long-lasting
Thorough
Useful
What are the five stages of product growth
Introduction (launch)
Growth
Maturity
Decline
Replacement
What does built in obsolescence mean
A product is made with a shorter life span so that the updated product will be more successful
What is intellectual property
Intellectual property is something physical that has been made by one persons idea such as an invention or a machine however the idea alone is not intellectual property.
What are the different ways IP can be protected
Copyright
Design right
Patents
Registered designs
Trademarks
Open design
What is a copyright and how long does it last
A copyright last 70 years and it is automatically applied to works of art, music and literacy
What is design right and how long does it last
Lasts for up to 15 years after first sale and protects stealing of designs
What is a patent and how long does it last
A patent is a 30 year long contract that protects useful design from being copied.
You must apply for a patent and the design/invention must be unique enough to get a patent.
What is a registered design and how long does it last
A registered design is a contract that protects to look of a design but not the mechanics.
It lasts 35 years but must be renewed every 5 years.
What is a trademark or logo
A trademark is a shape, phrase or sound that is tied to a company and a logo is an image which is tied to a company.
Trademarks or logos can last forever but they cannot contain pornographic images or known phrases.
Open design
Open design is simply when the design is not protected and allowed to be used for the good of society and not financial gain
What are some events that have influenced design+examples
WW1-Bauhaus/art deco
WW2-Utility furniture/discovery of plastics
Contemporary times-ageing population therefore more focus on medicinal products
What is corporate social responsibility
CSR is a company’s responsibility to help society and support sustainable development
What are some things companies must consider to be morally right
Health and safety of employees
Fair wages for employees
Equal rights
Training schemes
Flexible hours
What is inclusive design
Inclusive design is design that allows the product to be used by a variety of users regardless of age gender or ethnicity
What is fair trade
Fair trade is a company that helps farmers across the world get fair prices for their goods to stop exploitation from big companies
What is a linear economy
A linear economy is a system where materials are used to make products which are then used and disposed
What is a circular economy
A circular economy is a system where the materials are used to make products, then after the products death the materials are then re-used for another product
What are the 6R’s
Recycle
Rethink
Reduce
Repair
Reuse
Refuse
What are some examples of circular economy companies
Vintage clothing-reuses old clothes
Coca Cola-reuses caps as they can no longer be removed
Tesla-rethinks the fuel type of cars to make more eco friendly
What is quality control
Quality control is the monitoring checking and testing of products or components to ensure they meet the QA policies
What is quality assurance
Quality assurance is the procedures and policies put in place that reduce waste and ensure products are within acceptable range
What is ergonomics
Ergonomics is the consideration of how a person would interact with the product, for example the comfort of a chair, the ease of use of a remote control
What is anthropometrics
Anthropometrics is the use of data on the size of the human body to help design a product which most people can use (usually uses 5th-95th percentile)
What is anthropomorphism
When a product is designed to look like a recognisable living thing such as a human or animal or a human face to create an emotional attachment in the target user
What is empathetic design
The process of stimulating conditions experienced by target users to help develop the product
What is lean manufacturing
A manufacturing process which cuts out as much as possible so that it is as time and money efficient as possible e.g. Toyota car production
What was utility furniture what was socio economic event inspired it
Furniture which was basic and simply designed to help with shortages of materials
WW1 and 2
What is COID
Council of Industrial Design-a post Second World War British organisation set up to improve design standards and competitiveness
What is primary carbon footprint
Measures direct emissions of CO2 from the burning of fossil fuels including transport and domestic energy consumption
What is secondary carbon footprint
Measure indirect CO2 emissions from the products we use such as polymer plastic bags or products which use energy intensive processes
What are some advantages of renewable energy
Sustainable-never runs out
Social benefits-increases brand image
Less waste
Lower running costs
What are some disadvantages of renewable energy
Difficult to generate lots of energy
Not reliable-depends on weather
Cannot be stored in large quantities
Higher cost of energy
What does product miles refer to
The total distance over its lifetime that it has travelled and therefore how much emissions have been produced as a result from CO2 emitting trucks/aeroplanes etc.
What is TQM
Total quality management
All quality procedures are communicated to everyone in the workforce and everyone in the workforce checks products along production line
