Material Properties Flashcards
Strength
The ability to withstand a load or force
Hardness
The ability to withstand damage to the material such as scratches, punches or indentation
Toughness
The ability to absorb impact without damage or structural fracture
Plasticity
The ability to have the shape changed and the stay in the new shape
Ductility
The ability to be stretched out without cracking for example when being drawn into a wire
Malleability
The ability to be deformed under pressure without cracking
Electrical conductor/insulator
Does/doesn’t allow the flow of electrons or ions through its structure
Thermal conductor/insulator
Does/doesn’t allow the transfer of heat energy through the material
Opaque
Does not allow any light through it
Transparent
Allows photons of light through the material therefore it can be seen through
Translucent
Allows light through but diffuses/refracts the light so that a blurred image is made on the other side
Density
How much mass there is in a material in a set volume of space
Fusibility
The ability for a solid to become liquid easily
Magnetism
The ability for a material to attract nickel, cobalt, iron or steels
Corrosive resistance
The ability to withstand external factors which may degrade the material
