Modern and Industrial Scales of Practice Flashcards
What is one off/bespoke production
Production which is for only one product
Used for more luxury and expensive products
or for a specific need such as a disability
and always for a low demand
What is batch production
Production where the manufacturer makes a ‘batch’ of multiple products
Increases time efficiency and accuracy
used for a flexible demand of product
What is mass/line production
Production which is constantly running
Maximises time efficiency and can keep up with high demand
used for thing such as cars (Henry Ford), clothes, furniture etc.
What are unit production systems (UPS)
Devices that carry components from above from one workstation to another-mostly used in textiles to move the clothes without folding them
What is quick response manufacturing (QRM)
A manufacturing strategy that prioritises reducing the time between the product being a concept and being completed
This strategy gives the customer needs very high priority
What is vertical in house production
A manufacturing strategy where the supply chain is (almost) entirely owned by the manufacturer
E.g. Car manufacturers that make all the small components too
What is just in time production
A manufacturing strategy in which the exact amount of components are ordered for the exact right time instead of stockpiling
What is modular production
A manufacturing strategy where a single robotic ‘module’ or cell will carry out a sequence of operations and then pass on the finished product onwards in the production line
What are standard components
Standard components are components which are in a standardised size so that designers can design around this size and know it will be available
