16
Q

What is bending

A

Bending is the process of folding a board or card to create edges or corners

17
Q

What is laser cutting

A

Laser cutting is a process in which a powerful beam is fired from a fixed point
and after cutting through the material it is moved in the shape desired to be cut.
It is perfect for prototyping as it can cut, engrave, perforate and carve accurately.

18
Q

What are the two types of lamination

A

Lamination via encapsulation
Lamination via a surface coating

19
Q

Briefly explain lamination via encapsulation

A

Sheet of paper is encapsulated in polymer pouch or a film roll and then heat sealed leaving a polymer covering over the sheet of paper

20
Q

Briefly explain lamination via a surface coating

A

Liquid laminate or a film is applied and then given pressure and heat to help it stick to the surface

21
Q

What is embossing and debossing

A

Embossing and debossing are both processes in which the paper or board is indented to produce a design-embossing is when an area is raised up and debossing is when an area is pressed down

22
Q

What is a blind emboss

A

An emboss where there is no ink

23
Q

What is foil blocking

A

A finishing technique used for paper where a heated die presses through the foil sheet onto the paper behind it, in doing so the heated part of the foil sticks to the paper and then the rest of the foil is removed

24
Q

What is screen printing

A

A printing process in which printing ink is passed through a screen mesh through specific open areas onto the substrate, then a different screen is used for the next colour but the substrate is not moved to ensure accuracy.
This is repeated until the image is built up on the substrate

25
Q

What is offset lithography

A

A printing process in which fountain (dampening) solution is used to coat the non image areas with water and then an oil based ink is applied on the image areas and as the oil does not want to mix with the water in the fountain solution, the ink does not go in the non image areas

26
Q

What is flexographic printing

A

A printing technique which uses flexible printing plates which are wrapped around rollers to allow continuous printing. Water based ink is fed from the first roller to to the anilox roller which makes it a uniform thickness and to the ink plate roller

27
Q

What is digital printing

A

A printing technique where the digital image is sent to a printer and it applies ink to the substrate via stimulation of piezoelectric crystals
