Papers And Boards Flashcards
What is the difference between paper and board
Density-a board is anything over 200 grams/square meter
What is layout paper
Layout paper is standard paper that is used for sketching and drawing
What is cartridge paper
Cartridge paper is an off white paper usually with a textured finish used in printers
What is tracing paper
Tracing paper is a thinner, translucent paper used for replicating images
What is bleedproof paper
Bleedproof paper is paper that is similar to cartridge paper but doesn’t allow markers to bleed into the canvas
What is treated paper
Paper that has a clear binder layer to allow images to be printed onto it easier
What is watercolour paper
Textured paper that can either be absorbent, smooth or rough and is used for painting
What is molded paper pulp
Recycled paper pulp moulded into a shape used to usually to make eco-friendly packaging
What is corrugated card
Corrugated card is a board often used with cardboard sheets to make boxes for packaging
What is bleached card
Bleached card is white card chemically whitened to brighten the surface and allow high quality image printing and used for greetings cards
What is duplex card
Duplex card is strong card which can be lined with wax and is used for food packaging
What is laminated card
Laminated card is card with a polymer film or foil applied on one or both sides to provide a water resistant and/or heat resistant layer, it is used in food and drinks packaging
What is mount board
Mount board is a sturdy board made of compressed cotton which is usually used as the backing for hanged pictures
What is metal effect card
Metal effect card is a card of medium strength which appears metallic and so is usually used for gift packaging
What is a die cutter
A die cutter is a preset cutter which matches the shape you want to cut and presses down to either cut through the material or crease the material to make a net
What is bending
Bending is the process of folding a board or card to create edges or corners
What is laser cutting
Laser cutting is a process in which a powerful beam is fired from a fixed point
and after cutting through the material it is moved in the shape desired to be cut.
It is perfect for prototyping as it can cut, engrave, perforate and carve accurately.
What are the two types of lamination
Lamination via encapsulation
Lamination via a surface coating
Briefly explain lamination via encapsulation
Sheet of paper is encapsulated in polymer pouch or a film roll and then heat sealed leaving a polymer covering over the sheet of paper
Briefly explain lamination via a surface coating
Liquid laminate or a film is applied and then given pressure and heat to help it stick to the surface
What is embossing and debossing
Embossing and debossing are both processes in which the paper or board is indented to produce a design-embossing is when an area is raised up and debossing is when an area is pressed down
What is a blind emboss
An emboss where there is no ink
What is foil blocking
A finishing technique used for paper where a heated die presses through the foil sheet onto the paper behind it, in doing so the heated part of the foil sticks to the paper and then the rest of the foil is removed
What is screen printing
A printing process in which printing ink is passed through a screen mesh through specific open areas onto the substrate, then a different screen is used for the next colour but the substrate is not moved to ensure accuracy.
This is repeated until the image is built up on the substrate
What is offset lithography
A printing process in which fountain (dampening) solution is used to coat the non image areas with water and then an oil based ink is applied on the image areas and as the oil does not want to mix with the water in the fountain solution, the ink does not go in the non image areas
What is flexographic printing
A printing technique which uses flexible printing plates which are wrapped around rollers to allow continuous printing. Water based ink is fed from the first roller to to the anilox roller which makes it a uniform thickness and to the ink plate roller
What is digital printing
A printing technique where the digital image is sent to a printer and it applies ink to the substrate via stimulation of piezoelectric crystals
