A unified body of individuals with common interests, a common characteristic, or living in a common location.
Community-
a feeling that members have of belonging, a feeling that members matter to one another and to the group, and a shared faith that members’ needs will be met through commitment to be together
Sense of community-
4 elements of community -
membership, influence, Integration/fulfillment of needs, and shared emotional connection
- are any structures or mechanisms of social order and cooperation governing the behavior of a set of individuals within a given community.
Institutions
are created with the intention of governing human behavior OR to more effectively fulfill community member needs
Formal institutions-
are those that are not designed to regulate conduct, but often do so as members seek to conform to communal standards
Informal institutions-
Activities producing change in a community (contributing to its betterment), A process where community members are supported by agencies to identify and take collective action on issues which are important to them
Community development-
- To address social and community issues when you are trying to create change at a community or neighborhood level
When community development should be used
- Providing for the everyday needs of adults and children, 2. Creating institutions that fairly and democratically allocate goods and resources, 3. Cultivating relationships among people that promote human and cultural development, effective citizenship, and political will.
Community development organizations (formal institutions)-
– individual outcomes ( Increases in skills, knowledge, empowerment, self-efficacy) community outcomes ( Stronger and more cohesive communities, Changes in Social Capital, Changes in Civic Engagement, Improved Health)
Individual and community outcomes of community development
occurs when an organization has a specific goal of developing relationships among community members that then allows those members to identify more strongly within their community and behave in ways that are positive for the community
Intentional community development -
refers to instances when activities strengthen communities but that is not the primary focus or intent of the activity.
Residual community development -
- Communities identify a need or needs to be addressed, The community development is conceived, built, and implemented from within the community
Bottom-up community development approaches
- Organizations will come forward with broad objectives that they seek to pursue in several communities, The community development is organized and coordinated by an organization outside of the community and then essentially ‘dropped’ into a community, The community development is organized and coordinated by an organization outside of the community and then essentially ‘dropped’ into a community.
Top-down community development approaches
are those where the delivery of sport and increased participation is a primary concern, and the development outcomes are secondary goals (or just assumed to take place).
