Preservation of Irish music is very important as it enables future generations to access tunes and they are not forgotten. Irish music was an oral and aural tradition and so tunes were preserved by listening and engaging. Collectors of Irish music ensured these tunes were recorded or written down.

Captain Francis O’Neill was an Irish born American and a very talented musician playing the flute, the pipes and the fiddle. He collected Irish tunes in Chicago and then later from a wide range of Printed sources.

A

Sam Henry was collector from Northern Ireland. but though he collected music throughout his life he never managed to publish his own collection. In 1990 Sam Henry’s Songs of the people was published by the University of Georgia press. It is the largest collection of ballads and songs from Northern Ireland in between the wars.
