Q

I compared Hayes music to traditional music

A

Hayes style lazy typical of East Clare which I think gives the music a rhythmic quality of freedom. I compared the Tulla Céilí Band with the Martin Hayes Quartet and ‘The Gloaming’. The difference of dance music vs listening music is evident.

Q

What style did you hear listening to one of his songs- double jig

A

In the double jig ‘Tell her I am’ which uses ♩. and ♪♪♪ rhythm I heard note bending and terraced dynamics. I also felt the music had a lyrical, lilting quality backed by sensitive guitar supporting the desired mood. The music manipulates the rhythmic surface creating momentum.
