Presentation paper Flashcards
Paralogous proteins
Proteins within an organism that share sequence homology
Paralogous protein example
Myoglobin and hemoglobin
Protein specificity
How well a protein can distinguish between different sequences
Specificity involves both
binding to a specific partner, and not binding to other proteins
Many protein interaction domains in signaling proteins are members of
large paralogous families.
Paralogous proteins arise through a process of
gene or domain duplication.
Extant
Still in existance
Phylogeny
Traced patterns of shared ancestry between lineages.
Two-component signaling pathway
Signal transduction occurs through the transfer of phosphoryl groups from ATP to a specific histidine residue in the histidine kinase (HK).
Kinase
An enzyme that catalyzes the transfer of a phosphate group from ATP to a specified molecule.
Histidine kinases
Sensor proteins found only in prokaryotes.
The specificity of the HK-RR interaction is determined primarily through
molecular recognition with a relatively small number of amino acids.
Operon
a unit made up of linked genes which is thought to regulate other genes responsible for protein synthesis.
ancHK
Last common ancestral proteins from which both EnvZ-OmpR paralogs descended.
